The short answer: three budgets, and what each one buys
Per person, five nights, two sharing, September–October, excluding shopping.
A lean trip comes in around PKR 45,000–60,000 a head: the NATCO bus both ways at roughly PKR 10,250, a guesthouse at PKR 2,000–3,000 a night, shared seats rather than a private vehicle, bazaar food at PKR 900–1,300 a day, and PKR 3,000–5,000 for gates and tips.
A mid-range trip is PKR 95,000–130,000: a return flight booked three or four weeks out at PKR 32,000–50,000, a mid-tier double at PKR 9,000–12,000 a night shared, a vehicle with driver on three touring days at PKR 12,000–20,000 a day split two ways, PKR 1,500–2,500 a day on food, and PKR 4,000–6,000 on gates and boats.
A comfortable trip runs PKR 150,000–220,000: a flexible fare, a Deluxe Double with a balcony, a private 4x4 and driver throughout, and a food budget that does not think about it.
Two things matter more than the numbers. The largest controllable cost is not the room but the vehicle, charged by the day regardless of how many people are in it — which is why four travelling together sit far closer to the lean column than a couple does. And the gap between the three bands is mostly flight and jeep.
Five nights, per person, two sharing
- Lean
- PKR 45,000–60,000. Bus in, guesthouse, shared transport, bazaar food.
- Mid-range
- PKR 95,000–130,000. Flight booked ahead, mid-tier double, a vehicle on three days.
- Comfortable
- PKR 150,000–220,000. Flexible fare, balcony room, private 4x4 throughout.
- Four people, not two
- The vehicle and the gates are the only lines that scale with heads. Per-person cost falls toward PKR 75,000.

Getting to Skardu: flight, bus, or your own car
Three ways in, three completely different numbers.
Three carriers fly Islamabad–Skardu — PIA, Airblue and AirSial — in about an hour and five minutes. Booked ahead, one-way fares start near PKR 16,000; across the live one-way deals listed on 9 October 2026 the spread averaged roughly PKR 24,000, with peak and last-minute fares reported above PKR 40,000.
That is worth stating plainly, because several budget guides quote PKR 45,000 to 70,000 as the starting one-way fare for this sector. That is not what it sells for in advance, and taking it as the baseline will talk you out of a trip you can afford. Fares do climb steeply for July, August, Eid and the April blossom fortnight, and again inside the final week before departure.
The flight carries a cost nobody budgets. Skardu is flown on a visual approach, and when cloud sits in the valley the aircraft does not come — which can mean an unplanned Islamabad night, a rebooking, or two days on the road. Put a spare night in the money as well as the calendar.
The bus, and what the cheap fare really buys
NATCO runs Rawalpindi to Skardu over roughly 640 kilometres at around PKR 5,121 one way — by far the cheapest way in. Booking sites compress the journey into single digits; the real drive is a long day and a half on a road where weather, roadworks or a landslide each add hours. Guests who take it arrive tired and better acclimatised than those who flew.
Driving yourself, at PKR 396.65 a litre
As of OGRA's revision effective 8 October 2026, petrol is PKR 396.65 a litre and high-speed diesel PKR 394.94. Islamabad to Skardu is 630 to 700 kilometres each way, so a car returning 10 to 12 kilometres per litre burns 55 to 70 litres each way — roughly PKR 44,000 to 56,000 in fuel for the return journey, before tolls and two nights on the road.
Split four ways that beats flying. Split two ways it rarely does. The fly-one-way, drive-the-other split is the option most people never price and often should.

03
The line nobody budgets: vehicles and fuel inside the valley
Hired by the day, with a driver, as a unit — not per seat.
“The rate is for the vehicle, so four people pay what two do.”
This is where a Skardu trip cost is won or lost. Nothing worth seeing here is walkable except the Katpana dunes at our gate, and every other day needs a vehicle. Priced by destination rather than by day, Skardu operators quote roughly PKR 12,000 to 13,000 for a Shigar or Kachura day, PKR 14,000 to 26,000 for Deosai depending on the vehicle and whether you overnight, and PKR 14,000 to 28,000 for Khaplu, 103 kilometres east and genuinely a two-day trip.
Three things we say at the desk before anyone books a car. Confirm whether fuel is in the quote — some operators include it for a named route, others quote the vehicle dry, and at PKR 396.65 a litre a Deosai day is not a rounding error. A 4x4 is required for Deosai and optional almost everywhere else, because Kachura, Shigar and Khaplu town are metalled; paying Land Cruiser money for a tarmac day is the commonest overspend we see. And agree the stops before you set off, because a disputed day is almost always an unpriced detour.
Published 2026 day rates, driver included
- Toyota Corolla
- From PKR 8,000. Town, Kachura, Shigar — anything metalled.
- Hilux or Surf 4x4
- PKR 10,000–15,000. Rough tracks, Deosai in the dry.
- Prado TZ/TX
- PKR 12,000–25,000. The usual Deosai vehicle.
- Land Cruiser
- PKR 15,000–22,000. Deosai and long eastern days.
- Open Willys jeep
- PKR 10,000–15,000. Short, scenic, cold, no comfort.
- Deosai, priced as a day
- PKR 14,000–26,000 depending on vehicle and whether you overnight.

04
What a room costs in Skardu, including ours
Why the same room doubles between February and August.
Skardu room prices move by a factor of two across the year, because the valley earns most of its tourism income between late June and mid-September and every property builds its rate card around that. Broadly: guesthouses PKR 1,500 to 3,000, standard tourist hotels PKR 8,000 to 18,000, and the larger resorts well beyond that in peak weeks.
We publish ours rather than quoting only on the phone. The Deluxe Double Room is PKR 10,800 a night plus PKR 1,080 in taxes after our twenty percent Getaway Deal; the Economy Single Room is PKR 9,180 plus PKR 918. Both include a cooked breakfast from six in the morning, heating and hot water through the cold months, Wi-Fi and daily housekeeping. Lunch, dinner, laundry, airport transfers and jeep hire sit outside the rate and are quoted before anything moves.
One structural saving: booking platforms add roughly twelve to eighteen percent commission to the nightly figure you see. Booking direct removes that layer, and the person quoting you is the person who will hold your room when the seven o'clock flight is cancelled. Three nights or more usually earns a lower per-night rate outside peak — ask when you enquire rather than after you arrive.

05
Food: cheaper than you think, if you eat where we eat
The one line where Baltistan is better value than the plains.
Bazaar eating in Skardu is genuinely inexpensive. Reported 2026 prices put mamtu at PKR 15 to 40 a piece and a Balti curry with pilao at PKR 400 to 500 a serving, with a local-rhythm daily food spend of roughly PKR 900 to 1,300 per person. Hotel dining runs higher, and a sit-down dinner for two in a tourist restaurant lands nearer PKR 3,000 to 6,000.
Mix the two. Breakfast is already inside most room rates, and lunch is best taken wherever you have stopped — a trout lunch on the Kharmang road or a plate of balay in the bazaar is a fraction of a hotel dinner and better food. Budget separately for bottled water, which adds up at an altitude where you should be drinking far more than feels normal.

06
Entry fees, and the ones nobody can honestly quote
Reported charges, with the confidence attached.
We will not publish a confident Deosai gate price, and you should distrust anyone who does. Reported amounts differ by a factor of five, which tells you how firm the number is. Carry cash in rupees, expect to pay something at the gate, and treat any figure — including the ranges below — as one traveller's receipt rather than a tariff.
On permits: foreign nationals have not required a No Objection Certificate for Gilgit-Baltistan since 2019. Trekking and mountaineering permits are a separate regime with their own fees, and those do still apply.
What travellers report paying
- Deosai National Park
- PKR 200–400 per Pakistani visitor; around PKR 3,100 reported for foreign visitors. Low confidence — no official tariff is published.
- Shangrila / Lower Kachura
- PKR 500–1,500 per head at the gate. Low confidence — reports differ and the figure has moved.
- Upper Kachura
- Widely reported as free.
- Boating
- PKR 2,000–3,000 per hour.
- Katpana cold desert
- No fee. Open landscape, ten minutes from our gate.
07
The five things that actually blow a Skardu budget
None of them is the hotel.
Booking the flight late. The same seat can triple between eight weeks out and eight days out, and nothing else on this page moves that violently.
Travelling in the first week of August or over Eid, when rooms, flights and jeeps all price at peak simultaneously and availability vanishes.
Hiring a Land Cruiser for a tarmac day. Match the vehicle to the road rather than to the brochure.
Keeping no buffer for a cancelled flight. An unplanned Islamabad hotel night plus a rebooking is the single most common unbudgeted expense we see at this desk.
Arriving short of cash. Card facilities in Baltistan work but depend on mobile coverage, which drops in bad weather, and ATMs in the bazaar run dry over holiday weekends.
08
A worked example: two people, five nights in October
Flying from Islamabad, three touring days and two slow ones.
Return flights booked a month ahead come to about PKR 72,000 for two. Five nights in a Deluxe Double at PKR 11,880 including tax is PKR 59,400. A Kachura day at PKR 13,000, a Shigar day at PKR 12,000 and a Deosai 4x4 at PKR 20,000 make PKR 45,000. Lunches and dinners at roughly PKR 4,000 a day add PKR 20,000, gates and boats and tips another PKR 8,000, and airport transfers PKR 4,000 to 6,000.
That is roughly PKR 208,000 for two, or about PKR 104,000 each. Travel as four sharing two rooms and one vehicle and the per-person figure falls toward PKR 75,000, because the vehicle and the gates are the only lines that scale with heads rather than with the trip. Adding a sixth and seventh night costs comparatively little, which is the argument for a full week over a rushed four days.
To cut it without ruining the trip: come in late September or October rather than August, when rooms, flights and jeeps all step down from peak together. Book the flight the moment your dates are fixed. Travel as four if you can. Keep the 4x4 for Deosai alone, book direct, and eat one meal a day in the bazaar. What we would not cut is the acclimatisation day, or the second day at Khaplu if Khaplu is on your list — both save money only by spending the trip.
The worked example, line by line
- Return flights for two
- PKR 72,000, booked about a month ahead.
- Five nights, Deluxe Double
- PKR 59,400 including tax.
- Three vehicle days
- PKR 45,000 — Kachura 13,000, Shigar 12,000, Deosai 4x4 20,000.
- Lunches and dinners
- PKR 20,000 at roughly PKR 4,000 a day for two.
- Gates, boats, tips
- PKR 8,000.
- Airport transfers
- PKR 4,000–6,000, quoted before the car moves.
- Total
- About PKR 208,000 for two — roughly PKR 104,000 each.
Tell us your dates and which days you need a vehicle, and we will quote the room at our rate and the driver at the driver's rate, with no margin bolted on.

How we know this
Room rates and what the nightly figure covers are our own, published openly on this site. Vehicle day rates, flight fares, fuel prices, bus fares and gate charges are external and change constantly, so each is dated and attributed rather than presented as fixed. Where no authority publishes a figure — the Deosai gate fee above all — we say so instead of inventing one. All external prices were checked on 9 October 2026.
Reviewed: Each season, and whenever fuel prices, airline fares or vehicle day rates move materially.
Written and checked by the team that runs the house in Katpana, Skardu — the people who watch the Deosai road open and close, book the drivers, and answer the phone at midnight. Our editorial standards.

Questions
Questions about what a Skardu trip costs
For five nights with two people sharing, budget roughly PKR 45,000 to 60,000 per person travelling lean by bus and guesthouse, PKR 95,000 to 130,000 for a mid-range trip flying in with a vehicle on three days, and PKR 150,000 to 220,000 for a comfortable trip with a private 4x4 throughout. Those figures exclude shopping and assume September or October rather than peak August. The biggest single variable is how far ahead you book the flight; the second is how many people split the vehicle, because jeeps in Baltistan are hired by the day rather than by the seat.
