The best time for a Skardu trip from Karachi depends entirely on your tolerance for cold and what you wish to see. Spring begins around late March and runs into April, bringing famous apricot and cherry blossoms to the valley. The weather is still very crisp, but the visual display across the orchards is remarkable.

July and August are the warmest and busiest months. This is the prime window for families, as the high-altitude passes are clear of snow and Deosai National Park is fully accessible. However, this is also peak domestic tourist season, so the bazaar is crowded and flights are heavily booked.

Late September and October bring autumn colour, with the foliage turning bright yellow and orange. The air is sharply cold but usually very clear, offering excellent visibility for mountain photography. Winter in Skardu is severe, with sub-zero temperatures and heavy snow. While visually stark and quiet, many high-altitude roads close, and you must be fully prepared for the extreme cold.

The most immediate shock for anyone arriving from the coast is the complete lack of humidity. Skardu is a high-altitude desert, and the air is bone dry. Within a day, you will likely experience chapped lips, dry skin, and a dry nasal passage. You must pack heavy moisturiser, lip balm, and saline nasal spray to prevent minor nosebleeds, which are very common among sea-level visitors.

Dust is another factor. The wind sweeps fine sand across the valley, particularly near Katpana and Sarfaranga. Bring sunglasses to protect your eyes, and keep a light scarf handy to cover your mouth during jeep rides. Your body will also lose water quickly in the dry mountain air, even if you do not feel yourself sweating. Drinking significantly more water than you would back home is mandatory.

Finally, manage your expectations regarding the cold. Even in peak summer, the temperature drops rapidly as soon as the sun goes behind the mountains. Never leave your hotel for an afternoon trip without a warm layer in your bag, even if you are sweating in the midday sun.

While Skardu town has several ATMs, they frequently run out of cash during busy summer weekends or suffer from network outages. Do not rely entirely on your debit cards. Withdraw a sufficient amount of cash in Islamabad or carry enough from home to cover your local transport, meals and bazaar purchases.

Mobile connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan differs from the rest of the country. Standard networks from the south often have patchy or non-existent coverage outside the main town centre. Finally, respect the local culture. Baltistan is a conservative, polite society.
