Planning Your Extended Family Journey from Lahore to Skardu

The drive out of Punjab is straightforward and familiar, but once you travel past Islamabad and join the Hazara Motorway, the geography shifts dramatically. You trade flat farmland and humid air for deep gorges, sheer rock faces and a noticeably cooler climate. Skardu offers an environment completely distinct from the commercialised hill stations closer to home. Here, you will find high-altitude cold deserts, vast alpine plains and a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

It is a demanding route, but it gives families a rare opportunity to travel together through some of the most impressive landscapes in the country. A well-planned Lahore to Skardu trip provides more than just a change of weather. It introduces younger family members to the scale of the Karakoram range and gives everyone a chance to disconnect from city routines, provided you respect the distance and prepare properly for the conditions.

A common mistake is trying to squeeze a family trip to Skardu into a single week. Once you factor in a two-day drive from Lahore to Skardu, and a two-day drive back, a seven-day itinerary leaves you with almost no time to actually rest or see the valleys.

You should plan for a total trip duration of ten to twelve days. This allows for four days of travel and six to eight nights in Skardu itself. Grandparents and younger children will need a full rest day upon arrival to recover from the bumpy, winding roads before you start visiting local sites.

Building buffer days into your schedule also protects you against the inevitable delays caused by roadworks, minor vehicle issues or weather changes. A slower pace keeps the family relaxed and prevents the holiday from feeling like an exhausting endurance test.

We run on generator-backed power to manage valley outages, and provide an airport shuttle and driver service for day trips. We do not have a spa, gym, bar, or in-room dining menu.

The timing of your trip will dictate what you pack and where you can go. Spring begins around late March into April, bringing famous apricot and cherry blossoms to the valleys. The weather is still quite cold, especially at night, but the visual contrast between the flowers and the snow-capped mountains is distinct.

Summer, specifically July and August, is the busiest time for Lahore families due to school holidays. All major roads and local sites are open, including Deosai, but hotels and transport must be booked well in advance. The days are warm, though mountain weather can still turn suddenly.

Autumn arrives in late September and October, offering clear air and bright foliage. This is an excellent time for groups travelling without school-aged children, as the crowds thin out considerably. Winter in Skardu is harsh, with sub-zero nights. While the landscape is stark and beautiful, many roads to high-altitude areas are blocked by snow, limiting your itinerary.

A successful Skardu trip from Lahore requires adjusting your expectations and habits. First, mountain driving is entirely different from navigating the M2. Slow down, avoid overtaking on blind corners, and give way to ascending vehicles. If you have hired a local driver, trust their judgement and do not pressure them to speed up.

Second, manage your family's food expectations. While Arcadian serves familiar Pakistani and Balti home cooking, you will not find the extensive fast-food chains or massive dining strips of Lahore. Embrace the simpler, local cuisine.

Finally, respect the local culture. Baltistan is generally quiet and conservative. Avoid blasting loud music from your vehicles when driving through small villages, dress modestly, and always ask permission before taking photographs of local residents or their property.

While digital payments are common in big cities, cash remains essential in Gilgit-Baltistan. You will need cash for jeep hires, small roadside shops and local entry fees. There are ATMs in Skardu bazaar, but they frequently run out of cash during the peak summer holiday season. Withdraw sufficient funds in Islamabad or major towns along the Karakoram Highway before arriving.

Connectivity will also change. Standard mobile networks from Punjab often roam poorly or lose signal entirely outside of Skardu town. The most reliable network in the region is SCOM.
