The Overland and Air Route from Gujranwala to Skardu

Skardu sits in a wide valley carved by the Indus River, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Karakoram range. For travellers coming from the flat, humid environment of Gujranwala, the contrast is stark and immediate. You leave behind endless agricultural fields and crowded city streets to find a landscape dominated by rock, glacial meltwater and high altitude cold deserts. The sheer scale of Baltistan makes the long journey entirely worthwhile.

Rather than just a quick weekend getaway, Skardu is a destination that demands time and attention. It acts as the central hub for a comprehensive northern Pakistan trip. From this valley, you can reach the high plains of Deosai, the historic forts of Shigar and Khaplu, and the remote valleys of Basho. The air is thinner and cooler, the rivers run fast and grey with glacial silt, and the horizon is always blocked by jagged mountains.

Because the journey from Punjab takes significant effort, Skardu attracts travellers who want more than a standard resort holiday. It is a place for outdoor exploration, long drives through narrow gorges, and experiencing a culture that is distinctly Tibetan-influenced rather than South Asian. Understanding this shift in environment is the first step in planning a successful visit.

When planning your itinerary, you must account for the transit time from Punjab. If you are driving, you will lose at least two to four days purely on the road. Even if you fly, a cancelled flight can easily cost you a day of your holiday. Therefore, a short trip is rarely practical or enjoyable.

We suggest dedicating a minimum of five to seven full days in Skardu itself, excluding your travel days. This allows you to explore the major sites without rushing and gives your body time to adjust to the altitude. Trying to pack too many destinations into a tight schedule will mean spending your entire holiday inside a vehicle.

A longer stay also provides a buffer. If bad weather closes a road to a specific valley or delays your return flight to Islamabad, having extra days built into your plan prevents major disruptions to your onward travel back to Gujranwala.

Finding the right base is essential after a long overland journey from Punjab. Both categories include heating, hot water, and complimentary breakfast from our in-house kitchen, which serves Balti and Pakistani home cooking.

Our location is highly practical for travellers. We are positioned roughly ten minutes by road from Skardu International Airport, making arrivals and departures straightforward. The Skardu bazaar is about fifteen minutes away, and the Katpana desert dunes are our closest landmark. During the warm months (roughly late May to early September), our outdoor swimming pool is open for guests.

Your experience in Skardu will change drastically depending on the time of year. There is no single perfect time to visit, as each season brings different weather conditions and access to specific attractions. You must check current road and flight statuses before travelling, regardless of the month.

Spring, occurring from late March into April, brings apricot and cherry blossom to the valleys. The weather remains quite cold, but the landscape is highly photogenic. July and August form the peak summer season. The days are warm, the outdoor pool at Arcadian is open, and high-altitude areas like Deosai are finally accessible. However, this is also when the roads and bazaars are busiest with tourists.

Late September and October introduce autumn colour to the trees and clear, crisp air, offering excellent visibility of the mountains. Winter in Skardu is harsh, with sub-zero nights and heavy snow that blocks many high passes. While some visitors travel in winter for the stark isolation, you must be prepared for freezing temperatures and limited movement.

Starting your journey without a home airport requires extra coordination. If you are hiring a coaster for a large family trip, make sure you establish clear rules with the driver about driving hours. Do not push drivers to continue through the night on the Karakoram Highway; fatigue on mountain roads is extremely dangerous. Plan your overnight stops carefully.

You should also prepare for a shift in culinary styles. Heavy, oil-rich Punjabi cuisine is not the standard in Baltistan. Local Balti food is much milder, relying on different spices and ingredients. Our in-house kitchen at Arcadian serves reliable Pakistani home cooking, which provides a comforting middle ground, but it is wise to adjust your dietary expectations.

Finally, monitor the status of the GT Road and the motorways leading to Islamabad in the days before your departure. Fog in the winter, or heavy rain in the monsoon, can severely delay your arrival at Islamabad International Airport, causing you to miss your connecting flight to Skardu.

While digital payments are common in Punjab, cash remains essential in Skardu. The main bazaar has several ATMs, but during the busy summer months of July and August, they can occasionally run out of cash. Bring enough physical currency to cover smaller purchases, jeep hires, and meals at roadside cafes in remote valleys where card machines do not exist.

Mobile connectivity is also different. Standard network providers that work perfectly in Gujranwala often have limited or no coverage in Baltistan. You will likely need to purchase a local tourist SIM card (such as SCOM) upon arrival in Skardu to maintain mobile data access outside the hotel.
