Within half an hour: the Skardu sights you can do on arrival day
Low, close and kind to a body that has just flown up from the plains.
These are the places we suggest for the day you land and the day after. None of them adds much altitude. Your body is already adjusting to 2,230 metres after a flight from the plains, so this is not the moment for a 4,000-metre plateau.
Katpana cold desert
The dunes start ten minutes from our door. Locally they are called Nakpo Biama. White sand at over 2,200 metres, with snow on the peaks behind it, looks odd enough that it has become Skardu's signature image. Timing is everything. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give you side-light and ripples. Midday flattens it into a beige car park. In winter there is sometimes snow lying on the sand, which is when the famous photographs are taken. The last stretch onto the sand is soft, and saloon cars do get stuck. Our full guide to the Katpana cold desert at first light covers where to walk.
Kharpocho Fort
Kharpocho sits on the rock above Skardu town, where the Indus and Shigar rivers meet. The name means "king of forts". Its earliest structure is credited to the Balti ruler Ali Sher Khan Anchan at the end of the sixteenth century. In 1840 Dogra forces under Zorawar Singh stormed and razed it, and what you climb to today is largely a ruin. The reason to go is the view. From the top you can see the whole bowl of the valley, the braided Indus and the airport strip. The path up is short but steep, loose in places and has no shade, so go in the morning. Wear shoes with grip rather than sandals.
Nangsoq organic village
Nangsoq is behind the Kharpocho rock, on a bend of the Indus. There is no road to it, so you reach it on foot along a sandy path from town or by crossing the river. The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme recognised it as Skardu's first organic village in 2006, and it is listed by the Gilgit-Baltistan tourism department. This is apricot orchards, stone field walls and a simple lunch, not a landmark to tick off. It pairs well with the fort on the same morning.
Satpara Lake and Manthal Buddha Rock
Satpara is about 25 minutes from us, on the Sadpara road that later climbs to Deosai. The lake is at roughly 2,600 metres and is fed by snowmelt off the Deosai plains. The Satpara Dam downstream has enlarged the lake and made it a reservoir, so its level rises and falls with the dam. If it looks nothing like a photo from ten years ago, that is why. Guides that describe the lake as "drying up" usually predate the dam. The low shoreline and the road are the attraction here. It works as a first-afternoon outing and as a preview of the Deosai road.
On the way up, a short detour leads to Manthal Buddha Rock. This granite boulder in Manthal village carries a relief carving of the Buddha, probably from around the 8th century, from before Islam reached Baltistan. It is about 3 km off the Sadpara road. It takes half an hour, it is one of the oldest human marks in the valley, and it is easy to combine with Satpara.
Marsur Rock: the one to save for later
Marsur (also written Mansur or Masroor) Rock is a 38-foot slab of granite that sticks out over a drop above Hussainabad, with the whole Skardu valley below it. It appears on every Instagram list, and it is the one close-in sight we tell guests not to do on day one. The trailhead is about half an hour's drive from town. The path is around 2.3 km but climbs more than 800 metres to roughly 3,600 m. It has no shade, no markings and a loose descent. Allow about four hours, carry more water than you think you need, take poles if you have them, and go with someone who knows the route. It's a good hike after your second or third night in Skardu and a bad one on arrival day.

02
Half a day: the Kachura lakes
Two lakes, one name, and a gate at only one of them.
Kachura is two lakes, and mixing them up is the most common mistake we see. Upper Kachura (Foroq Tso) is deep, cold and free, and you reach it by a short scramble down from the road. Lower Kachura is Shangrila Lake, inside a private resort with a gate charge. Both are at about 2,500 m, roughly 30 km from Skardu, on metalled road the whole way. An ordinary car is fine. Go early, visit Upper Kachura first while it is still quiet, and be back for lunch. Our Kachura Lake guide covers the walk, the boats and why we don't print the gate price.

03
A full day: Shigar, Deosai, Manthoka and Basho
One of these per day, and no more.
These are the days that shape a trip, and you can fit only one into each day. Pick based on the season and on how many nights you have already spent at altitude.
Shigar Fort, Blind Lake and the Sarfaranga desert
Shigar is about an hour north on flat valley road. The restored Fong Khar fort, the old wooden mosques and the orchards around them easily fill a morning. Blind Lake is a short detour on the Shigar side for anyone who wants another stretch of water and a rougher track. On the way you pass the Sarfaranga cold desert, a wider and flatter sand plain where the Shigar valley opens out toward Skardu, at about 2,300 m. Since 2017 it has hosted an annual jeep rally with local music and food. Most guests do Sarfaranga on the Shigar day rather than as a trip of its own. Our Shigar Fort guide covers timings and why Shigar and Khaplu should not be combined into one day.
Deosai National Park and Sheosar Lake
Deosai is the reason many people come to Skardu, and the one place on this list you can get wrong enough to spoil a day. The plains average about 4,114 m. From Skardu you climb past Satpara to the Ali Malik Mar pass in about 90 minutes to two hours, on road that is unpaved for most of the way. A 4x4 with a local driver is required. Reaching Sheosar Lake and coming back takes a full day. The plateau is snowbound roughly November to May, usually opens around mid-June and closes with the first heavy snow in late September or October. Nobody publishes those dates in advance. Give yourself two nights in Skardu first, fill the tank the evening before, and carry cash, layers and food. The Skardu to Deosai road guide also covers the 2025 camping changes and why we won't quote a gate fee.
Manthoka Waterfall
Manthoka is a single fall of about 180 feet in the Kharmang valley, south-east down the Indus and not on the Shigar road, whatever some guides say. Published distances disagree: the tourism department says about 80 km, while the resort at the falls says about 40 km. Our drivers budget two to two and a half hours each way. It is best from May to September, gains almost no altitude, and there is trout at the bottom. That makes it a kind day for families, and usually the first thing to cut on a short trip. More in our Manthoka Waterfall guide.
Basho Valley
Basho is forest and meadow west of Skardu. A metalled road takes you to the bridge, and from there a 4x4-only track climbs above it. There is nowhere to sleep up there, so it is a long day out and back, and a green contrast to the bare rock of the main valley. See our Basho Valley guide before you hire the jeep.

04
Worth a night: Khaplu, and the road to K2
East up the Shyok, and north beyond Shigar.
Khaplu Palace (Yabgo Khar) and the Chaqchan mosque are about 100 km east up the Shyok valley. You can do it as a day trip, but it works much better with an overnight, and ideally not next to your Deosai day. Our Khaplu Palace guide explains why. Beyond Shigar, the road through Dassu to Askole is where the Baltoro and the K2 Base Camp trek from Skardu begin. That is an expedition and needs its own permits and planning, not a day trip.

How to combine the places to visit in Skardu into a trip
The order we suggest at the front desk.
The sequence matters more than the list. This is the order we suggest at the front desk.
Arrival day: nothing, or the Katpana dunes at sunset. Drink a lot of water.
Day two, low: Kachura in the morning, then Satpara and Manthal in the afternoon. Or Kharpocho and Nangsoq.
Day three onwards, high: Deosai, once you have had two nights at 2,230 m.
Other full days: Shigar with Sarfaranga, then Manthoka or Basho if you have a week.
Final day: keep it local. Skardu flights are flown on a visual approach, cancellations are routine, and the spare day belongs at the end.
If you want this laid out day by day, the 7-day Skardu itinerary does it. For which months suit which places (blossom in spring, Deosai in summer, gold poplars in October), see the best time to visit Skardu.
What to carry on any Skardu day out
- Cash in rupees
- Gate charges, boats and tea stalls are cash only, and ATMs outside town are unreliable.
- A warm layer, even in August
- Deosai drops to around freezing at night, and the valley cools quickly after sunset.
- Sun protection
- UV at altitude is strong even when the air is cold.
- Offline maps
- Assume there is no signal past Satpara or up the side valleys.
- Shoes with grip
- For Kharpocho, Upper Kachura and Marsur.

How we know this
Drive times, road surfaces and seasonal access come from our own drivers and from guests who come back the same day. Altitudes, dates and history come from the published sources above. Where no authority publishes a figure (gate fees at Deosai, Shangrila and Manthoka, or the exact Deosai opening dates), we say so rather than repeating a number from another site.
Reviewed: Each season, and after any road closure on the Deosai or Kharmang side.
Written and checked by the team that runs the house in Katpana, Skardu — the people who watch the Deosai road open and close, book the drivers, and answer the phone at midnight. Our editorial standards.
